Biotechnology regulation in Norway

Acts concerning biotechnology

There are two main acts regulating the use of biotechnology in Norway:

  • The Act relating to the application of biotechnology in human medicine, etc. About the Biotechnology Act
  • The Act relating to the production and use of genetically modified organisms. English translations of the Gene Technology Act

Administration

The Act relating to the application of biotechnology in medicine is administered by the Ministry of Health and Care Services, and medical use of biotechnology is supervised by the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

The Act relating to the production and use of genetically modified organisms is administered by both the Ministry of Health and Care Services and the Ministry of the Environment. Contained use of GMOs is administered by the Ministry of Health and Care Services, whereas deliberate release of GMOs is administered by the Ministry of Environment and the Norwegian Environment Agency.
